The Hours Nobody Plans For
Most eating plans account for meals. Almost none account for the stretch between dinner and bed, which is where a surprising share of the day's calories quietly arrive.
The reason evening grazing resists willpower is that hunger is usually not what is driving it.
1. You Under-Ate Earlier
The commonest cause by a distance. A light breakfast and a skipped lunch does not save calories; it defers them to a moment when you have the least capacity to make a decision.
The fix: move food earlier. A proper lunch is not indulgence, it is the thing preventing nine o'clock.
2. It Is A Habit, Not A Signal
Sit on the same sofa, at the same time, watching the same programme, and the setting itself requests the snack. The cue is environmental rather than internal.
The fix: change one element of the setting. Different chair, hands occupied, kitchen light off. Breaking the association matters more than resisting it.
3. You Are Tired
Short sleep raises the hormone telling you to eat and lowers the one telling you to stop. One bad night measurably changes how much you eat the following day without your noticing why.
The fix: sleep is the intervention. Everything else on this list gets easier when it is handled. More on that in sleep, hunger and what to actually track.
4. The Afternoon Crash Never Resolved
A steep glucose climb after lunch produces a dip a few hours later, and if you rode that out without eating, the demand simply reappears in the evening with interest.
The fix: fix lunch rather than the evening. Protein and fibre at midday flatten the curve producing the whole sequence, and acetic acid ahead of the meal is a small additional lever on the same mechanism.
5. It Is The Only Time You Stop
For a lot of people the evening is the first unmanaged hour of the day, and food becomes the reward for having got through it. That is genuine and it is not solved by a smaller plate.
The fix: find a different marker for the end of the working day. A walk, a shower, ten minutes of something deliberately unproductive.
6. Actual Hunger
Last on the list, because it is last in frequency. Occasionally you are simply hungry, and the correct response is to eat something with protein in it rather than to negotiate.
The Order To Work Through
Sleep, then lunch, then environment, then everything else. Working the list in that order fixes most cases before the difficult ones need addressing at all — and it puts any supplement firmly underneath the changes that carry real weight.
